A new Tesco has opened near KFC and McDonald’s which will serve hundreds of neighbours living in new flats near the town centre.
Tesco Express has opened at Huntley Wharf development opposite the Forbury Retail Park, which is home to KFC, McDonald’s and a number of home furniture retailers.
The development is made up of 765 apartments that replaced the old Toys R Us and Home Base stores in the retail park.
The Tesco has been called Palmer Drive after Reading industrialist George Palmer.
News that the store would be coming has been known for two years, as Tesco applied for a licence to sell alcohol in the unit back in 2023.
During the meeting where the alcohol sales were granted, Tesco legal advisor Jeremy Barker stated that the store would be opening this year.
Of the 5,000 products sold at Express stores, 80-110 of them are alcohol products.
Mr Bark said: “Alcohol sales are a small but important part of what we do.”
The store at 1 Palmer Street is open from 7am to 10pm each day.
As well as all the grocery items expected at Tesco convenience stores, it also features a Costa Express machine that can make hot and cold Costa Coffee drinks.
Drivers can make use of seven regular car parking spaces and a disabled parking space.
The Tesco Express at Palmer Drive opened in late May, according to a staff member.
