MPS IN Reading were among those attending a vigil in Forbury Gardens on Saturday following the murder of a doctor in India.
Junior doctors in the Indian state of West Bengal have resumed full strikes today as they feel the country’s judiciary has not enacted justice for the rape and murder of a junior doctor in August.
The murder of the 31-year-old woman sparked a wave of protests demanding greater workplace safety for women in the country.
Reading residents took part in a vigil in Forbury Gardens on Saturday, September 28, mourning the death of the junior doctor and seeking a stronger response from Indian judiciary.
Among them were Matt Rodda, MP for Reading Central, and Yuan Yang, MP For Earley and Woodley.
Speaking after the event, Mr Rodda said: “I was horrified to learn of the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata, India– I showed my support at a vigil in Forbury Gardens.
“This is a stark reminder of the scourge of violence against women and girls worldwide, and further highlights why the new government is taking this type of crime so seriously here in our country.”
Junior doctors in West Bengal are calling for “clear action” from authorities, including increased police protection in hospitals and the investigation of alleged corruption in medical colleges.
A court hearing in Kolkata on Monday, September 30, urged the state government to put safety measurements in place to protect doctors and ensure justice for their slain colleague, as well ensure that the victim’s identity was concealed.
