READING Borough Council is reminding residents to make sure they are eligible to vote as more than 13,000 households are still to respond to the annual canvas.
Residents are being asked to look out for final reminders in the council’s annual Electoral Services canvass, sent out this week.
The canvass is intended to get households onto the electoral register so that they can take part in local, national, and Police and Crime Commissioner elections.
Missing responses from residents mean that details such as their address may be incorrect, risking inability to have their voice heard in democratic processes.
Residents who have recently moved are particularly at risk of this, and those aged 16 or 17 can be added to the register so that they will be eligible as soon as they turn 18.
The letters sent out this week are the final phase of a three-part process which has taken place since the summer, and council figures show that around 13,600 households are yet to respond.
Where no response is received, the council contacts households by telephone.
Residents have until Thursday, November 30, to respond to canvass letters, which can be done by filling in their details and returning them, or online via the government website.
Those who need help or more information can contact the council by calling 0118 937 3717 or via: Elections@Reading.Gov.UK
