BETTER leisure centres in Reading are marking the Carers Active Together campaign on next week by offering carers a free day pass which can be used for gym, swimming or fitness classes at their chosen centre.
In partnership with Reading Borough Council, welcome sessions will also be held at Rivermead Leisure Centre from 10am to midday and from 4-6pm at Palmer Park Leisure Centre on Wednesday, April 15.
To celebrate the 61st anniversary of Carers UK, members and those in receipt of the Carer’s Allowance can get discounted access to Better fitness facilities in Reading throughout April.
GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs Rivermead, Palmer Park, South Reading and Meadway leisure centres on behalf of the council and Steph Smith is GLL’s Area Community Sport Manager.
“Research shows that 67% of unpaid carers feel more connected to others when they stay active,” Steph said. “Physical activity is great for the body and equally great for the mind.
“Our welcome sessions will provide information about the support available for carers in Reading and the opportunities available to get active. It’s all very relaxed and there’s no need to register – just come along.
“To take out a free day pass on 15 April, just visit your local centre with proof of eligibility.”
