AN ANNOUNCEMENT that fuel duty will be cut by 5p per litre from 6pm tonight has been welcomed.
In his spring statement, chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that the cut would last for 12 months, and see price at the pumps come down.
The price has soared due to instability in worldwide oil supply, with the cost of a barrel rising and falling.
In some places, the price of a litre of diesel reached £2.
Locally, prices seem to be stablised around 167.9p per unleaded litre and 174.9p for diesel.
Howard Cox, founder of the FairFuelUK Campaign, praised the chancellor for his action, saying it would give some respite to millions of motorists.
“It will only benefit drivers and the economy if the new fuel taxation level becomes permanent and is accompanied by the introduction of an independent pump pricing watchdog, we’ve notionally called PumpWatch,” he said.
“Today’s fuel duty reduction must be passed onto drivers immediately. PumpWatch is the ideal vehicle to make that happen.”
He called on the chancellor to meet with his group, saying that PumpWatch would “stop the perennial fleecing of drivers by businesses and speculators further up the fuel supply chain”.
