A former Reading FC player has today announced that she is retiring from international football, to the surprise of many fans.
Goalkeeper Mary Earps, once of Reading FC Women, has confirmed that she will no longer play international football for England just weeks before the Women’s European Championship starts.
Earps spent two years with Reading from 2016-2018 and played 34 times in the Women’s Super League 1.
The Royals then spent many successful years in the top flight of women’s football in England before former owner Dai Yongge decided to stop funding the team after their relegation to the Championship in 2022/23. Now owned by the Reading FC Community Trust, Reading FC Women play in the Southern Region Women’s Division.
Earps has gone on to have a legendary career including 53 England caps which saw her win the Euros in 2022 before the Lionesses finished as runners-up in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Reading FC Women took to X to wish her good luck for the future. They said: “Former Royal, Mary Earps, has officially announced her retirement from international football.
“ Mary pulled on the keeper’s shirt for us during our WSL campaigns from 2016 to 2018.
“She made a total of 37 appearances for the Royals under former manager Kelly Chambers.
“Thank you and good luck for the future.”
