GREAT Western Railway has announced that it is set to carry out “crucial” infrastructure works on the North Downs lines this weekend, with the main line between Reading and Wokingham affected.
From Saturday, October 25, up to and including Monday, October 27, closures will affect rail travel between Reading and Wokingham.
It means that replacement buses will service all journeys between Reading and Wokingham over those days, but South Western Railways services will run between Wokingham and Waterloo.
This upgrade is part of a wider programme to transform the North Downs line, and in so doing to allow for greater service frequency in the future.
Gatwick Airport remains fully accessible by rail throughout the works, with Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express services continuing alongside rail alternatives.
Andy Gallaugher, GWR Station Manager for the North Downs line, said: “We’re investing in the railway’s future. While we know disruption is never welcome, this critical work will deliver real benefits for passengers in the long term.
“Services to Gatwick Airport remain uninterrupted, and our replacement bus service ensures connectivity throughout the closure period.”
Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex route director, added: “Half term provides us with the opportunity to minimize passenger impact while delivering this essential upgrade. Our teams will work around the clock to complete these works safely and efficiently.
“We’re sorry for the disruption, but passengers will benefit from a more resilient network that keeps them moving.”
Further engineering work is scheduled for Sunday 2 and Sunday 9 November, and the weekend of 29/30 November in the Wokingham area.
Passengers are urged to check their journey before travelling and allow extra time.
