THE TOWN’S past was explored earlier this month, thanks to The History of Reading Society.
The group held its annual general meeting at Abbey Baptist Church in Abbey Square, marking the return of its in-person gatherings.
After the business had been taken care of, the group enjoyed a talk by Richard Bennett, chair of Reading Civic Society.
A former brewery worker, as well as having a career with British Rail and the Ministry of Defence, Mr Bennett was made a Deputy Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire in 2018.
His talk explored how the society was formed and shared some of its campaigns and projects, including working with developers to build better for Reading’s future.
The group welcomes new members, and its next meeting will be on April 17, again at Abbey Baptist Church.
The subject will be the History of Woodley and will see Ann Smith present. She worked for 20 years in Reading Central Library and has recently edited and published a book on The History of Woodley, written by members of the local U3A.
