A HOSPITAL in Reading is offering free prostate cancer tests later this week as part of a partnership with a local community organisation.

On Saturday (October 4) Circle Reading is to host free PSA blood tests aimed at men aged between 45-75, in partnership with Reading Lions Club.

It comes as recent data shows that 1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime; this reduces to 1 in 5 for Black men.

Prostate cancer is currently the most common cancer found in men across the UK.

PSA tests measure the levels of prostate-specific antigens in the blood. A raised PSA level might indicate a problem with the prostate but does not always mean cancer.

More than 47,500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the UK–129 men every day.

Early detection has been shown to greatly improve the chances of successful treatment.

Events like the prostate cancer awareness and testing day taking place at Circle Reading Hospital are amongst the most effective ways to combat the disease, especially as there is currently no national screening programme in the UK for prostate cancer.

While there has been a keen response since bookings opened, with slots full within 10 days, Reading Lions Club has been able to release a further 200 slots, allowing more men access to a test.

Attendees will have their PSA blood tests done at Circle Reading Hospital with all tests then being sent to Frimley Park Hospital for evaluation.

Results usually take between 3-4 weeks to come through and will be sent directly to the individual.

Rachel Barker, Interim Executive Director of Circle Reading Hospital, said: “Tragically 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

“We have teamed up with The Reading Lions Club to encourage as many men as possible between the ages of 47-75, who live in the Reading area, to book a free PSA test on Saturday October 4.

“Early detection and regular testing are two of the most effective ways of tackling the disease.”

Dave Ebsworth from The Reading Lions Club, said: “Reading Lions Club CIO is a local group of friendly volunteers who aim to promote the health and wellbeing of the Reading community.

“We fundraise throughout the year with every penny going to our community projects, such as our prostate cancer awareness and PSA testing programme.

“We are grateful for the continued support we receive from the Circle Hospital Reading; together we are creating real value for the community.

“We are also grateful to all our other sponsors and supporters who have helped make this event a success.

“We have hosted these events since 2013, with tests carried out for 11,134 men in that time, saving lives and raising awareness.’’
