A Championship club appears to be closing in on signing Reading FC defender Amadou Mbengue this summer.
The Royals defender has garnered plenty of attention for his impressive performances throughout the past couple of seasons and is available on a free transfer this summer.
Queens Park Rangers currently appear to be leading the race for his signature despite interest from several other Championship clubs.
Mbengue has also been offered a contract extension at Reading and could still decide to stay with the Royals as the club enters a new era under the ownership of Rob Couhig.
The 23-year-old centre-back formed a superb partnership with fellow young star Tyler Bindon last season as the Royals pushed for a play-off place despite all the off-field turmoil, only to miss out on the final day of the campaign.
Mbengue arrived at Reading on a free transfer from Metz in 2022 and has gone on to make more than 100 appearances in blue and white in all competitions.
Noel Hunt’s team are desperate to keep hold of the defender having already lost Bindon to Nottingham Forest last January, who rejoined on a loan deal until the end of last season.
However, it looks likely that Mbengue’s future lies away from the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Reading will need reinforcements at the back this summer regardless of Mbengue’s future and have already brought in former Lincoln City captain Paudie O’Connor to the club on a free transfer.
As well as QPR, Watford, Preston North End and Charlton Athletic have all registered an interest in signing Mbengue this transfer window.
