Caversham United FC will host Reading FC Women this weekend as the two teams meet in a local clash in the Berks & Bucks Women’s Senior Cup.
The Royals, previously in the Women’s Super League as recently as 2023, dropped down to the fifth tier of women’s football after owner Dai Yongge refused to put funding into the side to keep them competing in the Championship.
The team, now under the guidance of the club’s Community Trust, plays its league football in the Southern Region Women’s Premier Division.
Having moved away from playing at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, the Royals now contest their home games at Slough Town’s Arbour Park.
However, Reading will be making a return to the town on Sunday to face Caversham United in the cup competition.
Reading have struggled at the start of their league campaign, losing all four of their opening fixtures.
However, they have found better success in the Women’s FA Cup and have been victorious in the first two rounds, most recently defeating Richmond & Kew on penalties.
The Goats have also had their fair share of difficulties in their league campaign and identical to Reading, have lost all four of their opening games which leaves them at the bottom of the Southern Region Women’s Division One table.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Caversham United’s official account said: “Caversham United vs Reading FC. Wow. Not the circumstances hoped for with Reading FC Women’s situation and being down in Tier 5, but it really is a dream for lil’ old Caversham to be playing against part of the only professional team in the county.”
The game takes place at Mapledurham Playing Fields on Sunday, October 20 and kicks off at 2pm. Entry is free for all supporters.
