A NEW burger celebrating the American South was launched, appropriately, on independence day – July 4.

The July special for Reading-based Honest Burgers is the Bourbon BBQ Sriracha Burger, and it’s back by popular demand.

Not from cowboys wanting a hit of bourbon whiskey while rustling in the mean streets of the Ding, but from diners wanting a taste of the unusual.

It is a collaboration between Honest Burgers, Leeds-based Thicc Sauce and bourbon Maker’s Mark.

Honest Burgers head of food Adam Layton developed the original bourbon BBQ sriracha with Thiccc Sauce by blending a bright red sriracha hot sauce and a smoky chipotle barbecue sauce, together with a dash of Maker’s Mark bourbon.

If you’ve not had Maker’s Mark before, it is made from a winter wheat, instead of the usual rye, making it an unique full-flavored bourbon.

It is then fused with an Honest Beef burger with crispy onions and candied bacon. This is made by frying smoked streaky bacon with golden syrup, so it’s definitely authentically American.

The burger also includes double American cheese, pickles, lettuce and garnished with confit garlic mayo.

Adam says he was chuffed to be bringing back the Bourbon BBQ Sriracha special.

“Luca Rollini aka Thicc Sauce is a shining jewel in the indie hot sauce crown, and it was a real privilege to create something special together. And, to have Maker’s Mark on board is a dream come true – it’s been my favourite whiskey for 20 years,” he said.

Of course, there’s more to the Deep South than whiskey. So this month, there is a special drink to go with the burger: a Bourbon Peach Iced Tea, taking Kentucky as an inspiration.

The burger and iced tea will only be available until July 31, from its Market Place restaurant in Reading town centre. The burger is £14.50 and served with its rosemary salted chips, or £15.50 with a side when ordered by Uber Eats. The Bourbon Peach Iced Tea is £6.50 for a 330ml can.

For those that like their drink miles to be a little lower, there is a range of locally brewed beers from Siren and Double Barrelled as well.
