A woman has been sentenced to 10 weeks in prison after admitting neglecting two dogs and a cat, in breach of Section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
The Neighbourhood Town Centre policing team arrested and charged the defendant following an investigation into concerns about the animals’ welfare. Officers said the case highlights the force’s commitment to tackling animal cruelty and ensuring vulnerable animals are protected.
Under Section 9 of the Act, pet owners have a legal duty of care to ensure the welfare needs of animals are met, including providing a suitable environment, appropriate diet and protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the woman has been banned from owning animals for five years.
Police said they take reports of animal neglect seriously and urged members of the public to report concerns so action can be taken where necessary.
A spokesperson for the local policing team said the outcome demonstrates their determination to safeguard both the community and animals who cannot speak for themselves.
