Gareth Ainsworth has been appointed as the new manager of Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

Ainsworth, who is a Wokingham resident, had been in charge of the Wycombe Wanderers for 11 seasons, which made him the second longest serving manager in the entire English Football League.

But after more than a decade in charge with the Chairboys, Ainsworth has opted to take over at QPR after they sacked Neil Critchely after just 12 matches in charge.

Critchley had a torrid run after taking over from Michael Beale, who departed earlier in the season to join Rangers.

QPR have fallen down to 17th in the Championship table after going on a run of 10 games without a win, leaving them just eight points above the relegation zone.

Ainsworth has had an incredible tenure with Wycombe, who have managed to punch above their weight despite working with a tight budget.

Ainsworth led Wycombe to promotion from League Two in 2017/18 and then spearheaded the Chairboys’ promotion to the Championship in 2020.

Wycombe were victorious at Wembley Stadium over Oxford United in the play-off final which saw them win promotion to the Championship

They only spent one season in England’s second division and were narrowly relegated, losing out to Derby County by just one point.

Wycombe are currently in seventh position in League One after a run of five successive league wins.

Ainsworth has been active in Berkshire’s football scene for a number of years having previously represented Woodley United and Finchampstead Athletic FC.
