THOSE number crunching boffins have been busy again. This time, they’ve been looking at what is Reading’s favourite festive songs.
The research conducted by digital headphones magazine Headphonesty analysed Google Search data to determine which of Spotify’s top 100 Christmas songs are most loved by Britons.
Across the country, the top five is as follows:
Somewhere Only We Know: Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know, covered by Lily Allen in John Lewis’ 2013 Christmas advert, is the UK’s number one song, with 32,621 monthly Google searches.
All I Want for Christmas is You: Mariah Carey’s recurring smash hit is the second most-Googled festive song, generating 31,757 average monthly searches.
Silent Night: Silent Night, searched 18,779 times per month, is the UK’s third favourite Christmas song. It is the third highest-selling single of all time and has been covered by Mariah Carey, Michael Bublé and Justin Bieber.
Jingle Bells: UK residents search for Jingle Bells 17,870 times a month on average
Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree: Brenda Lee’s hit song is searched 13,924 times per month
Reading’s top three put Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You in top spot, then Somewhere Only We Know, and then Jingle Bells. We don’t know if it is the Batman smells version that made it to the top three.
Colin Toh, Chief Editor of Headphonesty, said: “Contrary to popular opinion, Somewhere Only We Know is the most Googled Christmastime song in the UK, beating Mariah Carey to the top. While All I Want For Christmas Is You landed in the top spot for most UK cities, the national search volume was just shy of Keane’s track.
“While All I Want For Christmas Is You might appear to dominate this time of year, data shows Keane’s hit actually receives the most search interest in Britain.”
