Reading manager Leam Richardson said his side were left “hurt” after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town.
The Royals looked set to secure a valuable away victory after Lewis Wing converted a first-half penalty to give them the lead.
But Huddersfield struck deep into added time, with Lasse Sorensen scoring in the 96th minute to deny Reading all three points.
Despite that, Reading remain in the play-off places, but Stevenage are just one point behind and have two games in hand.
Richardson admitted the late goal was difficult to take.
“It’s a tough one to accept when you concede so late,” said the Royals boss, speaking to Royals TV.
“The players gave everything and did a lot of things right.”
Reading had limited chances but remained organised for much of the game, restricting Huddersfield to few clear opportunities.
Wing’s penalty shortly before half-time put the visitors ahead, and they appeared on course to hold out for a win that would have strengthened their position in the League One play-off race.
However, Huddersfield applied late pressure and eventually found a breakthrough in stoppage time.
Richardson said his side must learn from the experience.
“We have to manage those moments better. At this level, games can turn in seconds.
“If it had been the other way around, we would be elated despite being the same result. A point away from home at this level is huge, it’s just the manner of it with 30 seconds to go.
“We are disappointed in the manner of it, but it is another point on the board and another game where these are, pound for pound, up there with Luton, Bolton and Stockport. We will do the right things and make sure we cool down for a really big game on Monday.”
The Royals now turn their attention to Monday when they host high flying Lincoln City, who are top of the table with a 10-point lead.
