The candidates
Allison Carnell, Conservative
I am delighted to have been select as the candidate in Park ward, the ward where I grew up.
I will fight for the people of Park ward to see that their voices are heard in the council chamber. I was very disappointed that the labour administration chose to bank the £6 million underspend on the budget this year, rather than freeze the council tax at last year’s rate, giving the people of Park ward a valuable, indeed essential, saving this year.
I will work tirelessly to see that the constant scourge of potholes are addressed in a timely manner, and the parking problems get the attention they deserve.
Chris Dodson, Lib Dem
Chris Dodson is a retired chartered accountant and international businessman. He is passionate about creating a clean environment as well as a fair, equal and just society for all those living in Reading.
His special interest is in fair representation where every voice will be heard and counted.
If elected, his priorities are getting a fair deal for Park ward residents and services, building the affordable housing we need, where we need it, and protecting our green spaces and woodlands from further development.
Ram Galami, Labour
I’m Ram Galami. I’m an ex-member of the Ghurka Regiment of the British Army, with whom I served for many years. Reading is my home, and I’m working to make it a better place for all residents. My life in the army has taught me that we are best when we work together, and I know from personal experience that the members of the Labour team here know how to work together to make progress for our town.
I want to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in Park Ward. I am
keen to support residents and address their concerns whether that be with parking issues or speeding, litter, leisure facilities or clean air. My work over many years to support Gurkha veterans in their efforts to get jobs, after service in the Army, helps
me to understand the needs of different communities in the ward.
Sarah Magon, Green
Sarah Magon has lived in Park Ward for over 20 years. Sarah has many years of experience working locally in the NHS and more recently as a teacher. In Sarah’s spare time, she enjoys being outdoors and spending time with family.
Sarah says, “I love living in Park Ward with all it has to offer. I’m working hard to improve the local area by reducing litter, reporting fly tipping and more generally representing the interests of residents in Park Ward.”
Adam Phelps, Conservative
I am delighted to be standing as the Conservative candidate for Park Ward, where I live with my wife and young daughter.
I have called Reading home for over 20 years, moving to the area to study at the University. For many years, I commuted to Oxford where I worked within the publishing industry.
I now work at the University of Reading in the area of public engagement and marketing.
Reading is a great place to live, work and raise a family but it can be even better.
There is no doubt that the Labour-run council can deliver services much more efficiently and provide better value for money.
Josh Williams, Green
Cllr Josh Williams has lived in Park Ward for 13 years. Josh is involved with community groups ranging from gardening to road safety. In their spare time, Josh enjoys spending time with their young family in Palmer Park come rain or shine.
Josh was first elected in 2014 and has many years of councillor experience. Josh says, “It is an honour to represent where I live. Recently I have been working to improve road safety on Crescent Road with the School Streets initiative. I will keep working hard and making sure we have a voice on the Council.”
Green councillors and candidates are working for a fairer, greener, more affordable town.
Greens did so well at the council elections last year that we overtook the Conservatives becoming the second largest party on Reading’s Labour-run council (32 Labour councillors, 7 Green, 6 Conservative and 3 Lib Dem). Labour have a very large majority of councillors but it is very close between Greens and Conservatives for second place.
Vote Green at the council elections on Thursday 4 May for hard work year-round but also to keep the Green Party ahead of the Conservatives as the main opposition party on Reading Council.
Get involved with the campaign. We will only win with your help.
OIlie Williamson, Labour
My name is Oliver Williamson and Reading has been my home for over a decade I am delighted to be representing Park Ward for the Labour party once again this year. I will continue to voice local issues within Labour and will continue to talk to as many people in Park Ward as possible. I come from a working-class family and my grandparents came here from Jamaica as part of the Windrush generation. I am a trade union and LGBT+ rights activist and have worked with both local and national organisations to ensure that people get the representation and support they need to live happy healthy lives.
As a councillor, I will stand up for Park Ward, and ensure that it has the representation it deserves, and keep working to make Park Ward a delightful place to live. I want to represent people and help our Labour council create a happy healthy future for all. That means securing housing that is both liveable and affordable, taking action to create a carbon neutral Reading, and keeping our vital public services running at the highest standard.
I believe that Reading Labour has a strong and clear vision for making Reading the best it can be. We have gone from success to success, and I will make sure we continue to build on this. We need elected representatives that don’t just point out problems, but that work to create solutions. Elect me and I will be that voice for Park Ward.
Henry Wright, Lib Dem
My name is Henry, I’m 24 and I grew up and have lived in Reading for most of my life. I joined the Lib Dems because I want people to be free to live their lives, unencumbered by poverty or discrimination. I’m standing to reduce living costs (on housing and transport) and to create a better health and care system. If elected I’d seek to achieve these priorities and more through more housing supply, increasing council involvement in the local NHS, and (as a keen cyclist) much better cycle lanes!
