The candidates
Mohammed Ayub, Labour

I am honoured to have been an Abbey Ward Councillor since 2007 and I have lived and worked in Reading for over 53 years. Whilst being a resident in the abbey ward for 40 years, I have seen the town evolve over the decades.
As an Abbey ward resident, I have proudly served this ward as Councillor for the past 16 years and I am eager to continue representing our town centre constituents with their issues.
The Council’s initiative to achieve a carbon-neutral Reading by 2030 is critical and I feel it is entirely within our grasp. Initiatives around sustainable transport and active travel are key in helping to achieve these goals. Planting trees in the town centre can reduce carbon and aid in lower temperatures in the town centre in the future. I will continue to lobby government for retro-fitting initiatives to make our older homes more energy-efficient.
As a town centre councillor, the issues surrounding affordable, decent homes is vital. We will continue to put pressure on rogue landlords and work hard to ensure that new development is respectful of Reading and provides improvements and benefits for the future.
I have taken on numerous responsibilities to deliver the best service for Abbey Ward and its residents. I am chair of Traffic Management Subcommittee and I am on the board of directors for Readibus and Reading Welfare rights. I also served as Mayor in 2016.
The challenges of Abbey ward are unique in Reading and I feel we’ve made positive strides forward in shaping a greener more responsive and attractive town centre. I’d look forward to continuing to meet those challenges and I ask again for your vote on the 4th of May.
