STUDENTS at UTC Reading have been celebrating after receiving their GCSEs and Level 2 Technical Qualifications.

The University Technical College is a STEM-focused school specialising in IT and engineering and computer science and welcomed back its Year 11 cohort to collect their results.

The overall pass rate was Attainment 8: 49.26, with 72% of students achieving at least grade 4 in English and Maths. This was 48.3% for grade 5 upwards and 11% for grade 7 upwards.

Students at UTC Reading study English, maths and science as core subjects and then specialise in either engineering or computer science and two other subjects.

Alongside these, the students have had numerous enrichment opportunities to enhance their experience and engaged with local and national employers through different projects to help them define their direction and steps to future employment. They include Natwest, DP Architects, Microsoft, SSE, Thames Water, and Sage.

Executive principal of UTC Reading, Wayne Edwards, said: “The students have achieved fantastic results and that is due to the hard work and dedication that they have shown. The students will be able to progress to the next stage in their future with the skills to be successful.”

And head of school Jennie Thomson said: “This is a good day for UTC Reading, seeing our students achieve great things after all their hard work over the last two years.

“Our students have experienced one of the most turbulent educational experiences in recent history with the return from COVID lockdowns, the highest student and teacher absence rates for years and multiple national teacher strikes.

“Throughout all this our students have shown exemplary resilience, perseverance, and determination to secure excellent destinations for their futures.

“I am really proud of each of them and their achievements and I wish them the very best of luck for their next steps. I look forward to staying connected with them to hear about even more success in the future, and to continue working with our students who are staying with us into Post-16.”

Many students will stay on at UTC Reading for sixth form.
