CAT’S PROTECTION’s Newbury centre is raising funds for needy felines with a race between mythical beings.

Plush unicorns will go horn to horn in a cuddly contest, with proceeds going towards the cats the charity supports.

As well as placing their bets on the derby, visitors will be able to visit cats waiting for adoption and browse a number of stalls.

Refreshments will be available, as well as stands selling books, plants, cat toys, and jewellery, as well as a raffle and a tombola.

Centre Manager Karen Clarke says: “We cannot wait to welcome everyone back through our doors once more.

“We’ve really missed seeing our wonderful supporters and our fun days provide us with much-needed funds for around 250 cats who come into our care each year.”

The event will be the centre’s first fun day since 2019.

“Just one of the cats who will benefit from the fun day is our oldest cat on site, Kika, who is a mature moggie at 17 years old.

“She arrived recently after her owner became unwell and could no longer care for her.”

Kika is described as an affectionate older girl searching for an owner who understands that she may need a few adjustments because of her advancing years.

“She’s not quite ready to meet her new family yet,” says Ms Clarke, “as she is having regular vet-checks at the moment.

“We discovered Kika is diabetic when she arrived and needs insulin to stabilise the condition so we are monitoring her closely and any other treatment she may need will be carried out before we match her with her new owners.

“If you come along to the fun day, perhaps you’d like to race a unicorn just for her.”

The event takes place at the Cats Protection Centre on Curridge Road, Newbury, from 1-4pm on Sunday, May 29.

Entry is £1 per person, though children go free.

Donations of plants, cakes, and produce are warmly welcomed.
