A BARN dance in Twyford has raised more than £3,000 for Understanding Dementia, a charity that supports people with the condition, as well as their family and carers.
The event, which attracted dancers from all over the borough, was sponsored by Sonning Gardens Care Home and the David Brownlow Foundation, and took place at Loddon Hall on Saturday.
The family friendly barn dance was not only a fund raiser for Understanding Dementia, but an opportunity to enjoy a fun shindig, with music from traditional ceilidh band, Hullabaloo, accompanied by a caller to help people learn the steps.
Shirley Pearce, the charity’s CEO and lead trainer, said: “It was lovely to watch everyone at the Barn Dance having so much fun, and we are so grateful to everyone who came, danced and bought raffle tickets.
“Huge thanks to our event sponsors, dance sponsors and raffle prize donors, and all who helped to make this event so successful.
“The money raised means we can reach more family dementia carers with our training, support and advice.”
Lucy White, fundraising, marketing and training officer said: “I enjoyed soaking up the lively atmosphere at the barn dance – it has such a community feel.
“We are so happy to have raised a net amount of £3091.
“We are grateful to everyone who contributed in every way, and we couldn’t have done without our wonderful volunteers.”
The annual event enables Understanding Dementia to continue its work to provide free training and support for dementia carers.
Support is available for family and friends supporting someone from within their home, or from a distance, regardless of whether a dementia diagnosis is yet to be made.
