A MAN has been jailed following a burglary in Tilehurst in April.

Michael Mullin, aged 53 and of Hollicombe Close, Tilehurst, pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to steal, and has been sentenced to six months in prison.

He also pleaded guilty to failure to surrender to custody in a hearing at Reading Magistrates’ Court 30 July, after he failed to appear for sentencing at the same court on 2 October.

He eventually appeared for sentencing at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 21.

It follows an incident where, between the hours of around 4am and 7am on Sunday, April 21, police were called to an intruder alarm which had been activated at the Westwood Farm Community Centre in Tilehurst.

Officers found a point of forced entry on arrival, but nobody was found at the premises despite a search.

During the subsequent investigation, which involved forensic evidence and CCTV footage, Mullin was identified as the offender and arrested on Tuesday, June 4.

He was charged eight days later, on Wednesday, June 21.

Investigating officer PC Rhys McCormick said: “This is an excellent result for the community of Tilehurst.

“Burglary and acquisitive crime has a detrimental impact on victims, families and the wider community.

“It leaves victims covering the cost of the damage caused to their properties, losing valuables and living with the impact of crime.

“This was a thorough investigation, identifying Mullin and bringing him to justice.

“I am pleased that he will now serve a custodial sentence as a result of his offending.”
