A TILEHURST man banned from driving has been jailed for causing a road traffic collision while riding an illegal ebike.

Twenty-one year old Kyle Giles was riding the ebike along Norcot Road when he collided with a car at the junction of Broomfield Road, shortly before 8pm on Tuesday, September 25.

Thames Valley Police said the ebike was capable of reaching speeds of up to 45mph, exceeding the power output allowed for electrically assisted pedal cycles.

Giles, of Rodway Road, had been going at speed, and broke his ankle as a result of the collision.

At High Wycombe Magistrates Court on Friday, February 2, he pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance.

On Thursday, April 18, he returned to the court, where he was sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, disqualified from driving for a further 588 days and ordered to pay a surcharge of £154.

Investigating officer PC Emily Aldridge of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said: “Kyle Giles chose to ride an e-bike which was not road legal and collided with a vehicle, causing an injury to himself.

“He was also already disqualified from driving and showed a flagrant disregard to his disqualification and the law.

“I am pleased that the courts recognised this and gave Giles a custodial sentence as a result.

“I hope that Giles uses his time in prison to reflect upon his actions.”
