EARLEY’S all-female vocal ensemble, The Barberettes, has returned from an outstanding week in Saint-Raphaël, France, where the singers competed in the prestigious International Choir Competition.

The event, held at the Palais des Congrès, welcomed 19 choirs representing 14 countries from all over the World, and attracted an audience of more than 1,000.

In their 50th anniversary year, The Barberettes delivered a remarkable performance, securing two second places, and fifth place in three different categories.

The Barberettes were also voted the ‘Miss Congeniality’ prize by competition staff and audience members for their friendliness, and the energy and fun that they brought to every performance.

As the panel of International judges said: “The Barberettes have energetic show performances in their DNA and should never change.”

Emma, Musical Director of The Barberettes, said: “We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved in France.

“The standard was extremely high, and performing to such a large audience in an incredible outdoor arena was a real highlight for us.

“It’s been a great way to mark our 50th year and to show what a local choir can achieve.”

The Barberettes rehearse weekly in Earley and are a well-established part of the town’s musical community.

Their recent achievements reflect months of preparation, underpinned by strong local support.

They’ve also just returned from a weekend celebrating their joint 50th birthday with Avon Harmony in Bristol.

As two of the three founding members of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers, they have much to celebrate.

Looking ahead, the group is preparing for a series of performances in the borough.

They are also opening auditions to new members aged 18 and over, with no previous choir experience required – just a passion for singing and a willingness to learn.
