THAMES Hospice has commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a visit from the Welsh Guards and has announced it has received an employer recognition accolade.
It held a commemorative event in which it hosted members of the Welsh Guards, who, as well as being an infantry regiment, also perform a ceremonial role as the guards of the royal palaces.
They were welcomed with a military bugler, who performed The Last Post, ahead of the national two-minute silence, which was observed by attendees who had gathered at the hospice last week.
It formed part of the national recognition of VE Day, in which we reflect on the end of World War II in Europe and remember the bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces and civilian communities who contributed to the war effort.
As part of the day’s commemorations, Thames Hospice also announced that it has been awarded the Bronze Award under the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme– a national recognition of the Hospice’s commitment to supporting serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and military families.
Dr Rachael de Caux, Thames Hospice Chief Executive, said: “It was a great honour to welcome the Welsh Guards and to stand together in a moment of national reflection.
“VE Day reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of so many, and we are proud to play our part in remembering them.
“We are also delighted to have received the Bronze Award from the Armed Forces Covenant–it reflects our ongoing dedication to supporting the armed forces community within our Hospice and beyond.”
Thames Hospice has pledged to ensure that veterans and those connected to the military are treated with fairness, respect, and inclusion.
