PEOPLE interested in Reading’s history can join a guided walk at the weekend to find out more.
Walk Reading organises walking tours of the town, uncovering the history and culture, tales and secrets of the town.
This weekend the theme of their tour is photography, with a focus on the pioneering work of William Henry Fox Talbot and the Reading Establishment.
Walkers of tour Reading – The home of Photography, will discover the ancient origins of the discipline, starting with the camera obscure, and will hear the story of how Fox Talbot built on this knowledge to develop his technique in the 1830s.
The group will visit the sites of photos of old Reading from the same period to see what has remained and what has changed.
The role of Nicolaas Henneman, and significance of publication, the Pencil of Nature, will also be revealed.
The one hour mile-long walk will take place on Saturday, November 2, at 10.30am.
It starts outside Abbey Medical Centre, at the junction of Russell Street and Baker Street,and ends by Global Cafe on London Street.
