Speed bumps and a 20mph limit will be coming to a much-travelled route in Reading in the coming weeks.
Earlier this year, Reading Borough Council agreed to a £200,000 project to reduce the speed limit and add traffic calming measures to Northcourt Avenue.
The long residential road links Christchurch Road in the university area of the town with Cressingham Road in Whitley.
The project involves installing 15 speed humps, two raised tables with its junctions and painted 20mph roundels.
Two speed humps and a 20mph speed limit will also be enacted in Wellington Avenue, requiring the closure of the roads.
Works are set to begin on Monday, December 8 and last until February 2026.
Councillor Andrew Hornsby-Smith (Labour, Church), who represents the area, said: “After a lot of hard work by officers, working with councillors and the Northcourt Avenue Residents’ Association, I’m delighted that work on the traffic calming scheme will begin on December 8.
“This is funded by developer contributions. It is going to make a huge difference in reducing speeding and creating a safer residential road.”
A council spokesperson added: “To ensure the safety of members of the public and the workforce, a rolling road closure will be in place while the work takes place. Wellington Avenue and Northcourt Avenue are scheduled to be closed between December 8 and February 6, 2026.
“Locally signed diversion routes will be in place during the road closures to ensure access for residents.
“The works and closure are not expected to be in place over the Christmas and New Year period.
“Where it is safe and possible, vehicular access and parking for residents will be maintained during the work but cannot be guaranteed.”
