STUDENTS at a Wokingham school have raised £3,650 for causes across the world throughout this academic year.
Leighton Park’s Sixth Form charity Group, Amicus, has delivered a number of events which have brought the school and its wider community together.
Their activities, including non-uniform days, Christmas jumper day and toy collections, saw £1,250 raised for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal, £500 go to Save the Children, £400 to Reading Family Aid and £1,500 to Fundacion Allegro.
Lower Sixth student and Amicus member Deyla said: “Amicus is important because it instils the values of peace and charity, and it’s really important in this fast-moving world that we get to know about these things.
“I thought it was a really good concept when I wanted to join; that was my main motivation for getting involved.
“Most of the organisation is done by students so it’s also a really good way to invoke your teamworking skills and your leadership skills.”
Fellow group member Marta, said: “It’s not something led by a teacher, of course we have Paolo’s help, but it’s us deciding what to do with the money and how to earn the money.
“We can decide what charities to invest in to make the biggest difference in the world.”
As well as fundraising, the group also found time to undertake litter picks around the school, collecting five bags of rubbish in June.
