THE CIRCUS is coming to town.
And Paulo’s Circus boasts an animal performer with a difference.
Its new star, Ion, is unique – he’s a robotic performing lion.
He can make daring leaps, do handstands, and even twerk, and he’s been making waves in the south west where Paulo’s Circus has just finished its summer season.
Ion’s creator is Kenny Darnell Jnr.
“He’s a one-of-a-kind robotic lion, the first of his species,” said Kenny.
“Not only can he walk, run and jump, but the little chap can also talk, though he keeps quiet in the show.”
It took around eleven months of planning to bring the robotic lion to life.
“His head was carefully designed and 3D printed,” explained Kenny, “then his face was hand painted to ensure he looked irresistibly adorable.”
Ion has established himself with audiences as something of a daredevil, performing audacious leaps, through a hoop, and over fire.
But it seems that he can sometimes be a bit of a diva to work with.
“In his first month he bailed on several performances,” explained Kenny.
“And one day his Wi-Fi card simply vanished into the ether – no explanation – just gone.
“He’s overheated, he’s spontaneously shut himself down, and he’s even collapsed mid-ring for no reason at all.
“But that’s part of his charm.
“It’s who he is.
”He’s a robot after all, blazing a trail, one slightly wobbly paw at a time.
“And despite all the technical headaches, sleepless nights and unexpected surprises, I wouldn’t trade him for the world.”
Paolo’s Circus has arrived in the borough, ready to open the show.
To enjoy it, and robot star Ion, people should make their way to Dinton Pastures.
The circus will be there until Sunday, October 12, performing at different times on different dates (audiences should check the website).
Tickets cost £9 and £11 depending on seats.
Children under two enter free of charge, but must sit on an adult’s lap.
