THE UNIVERSITY of Reading has been awarded prestigious accreditation for a range of its courses, recognising a high quality of teaching.
The university’s department of Geography and Environmental Sciences has celebrated after being accredited by the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG).
Three of its programmes have been highlighted for their exceptional level of teaching and learning: both BSc courses in Human Geography and Physical Geography, and the BSc course which combines both Human and Physical Geography.
The course options which include Study Year Abroad and professional experience have also been accredited.
The recognition demonstrates that the courses meet the high standards of the 2022 QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Geography.
Accreditation is judged by the knowledge, understanding, skills, and approaches that students gain through their degree programmes.
The university was one of nine others in this round of accreditation and now joins the likes of King’s College London, Swansea University, and the University of Edinburgh.
Professor Rob Francis, Chair of the Accreditation Review Panel, said of the accreditation: “It is fantastic that another group of geography programmes have been accredited by the society.
“One of the great things about reviewing applications is learning about the great initiatives taking place in geography departments across the country.”
Dr Stuart Black, Head of the University of Reading School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science, said: “It is fantastic news that our excellent programmes have been recognised by the RGS-IBG through this accreditation and shows the hard work and professionalism of all the staff in the department.”
