Reading University alumnus reveals secrets of thriving social enterprise

NYASHA Gwatidzo’s new publication launches this month at the Great British Expos Ltd event, The Festival of Female Enterprise.

The social entrepreneur, former winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Great British Awards, and former Reading University student, has written a guide for people wanting to make a positive impact in society.

Her book is called, Scaling for Good: Six Strategies for Growing Social Enterprises and Making that Huge Impact.

She said: “Over the course of my 40-year career, I have set up and grown numerous thriving social enterprises.

“As a mentor in the field, I am frequently asked for guidance on how to grow a social enterprise.

“It is therefore my wish to share my experience, including the mistakes I have made and what I have learnt from them along the way.”

Her guide explores six fundamental strategies crucial for the growth and sustainability of social enterprises.

Readers will be able to learn from real-world examples, including Nyasha’s first Social Enterprise Banya Family Placement, Green Machine Computers, Patagonia, TOMS Shoes, and Grameen Bank. The book highlights the transformative power of scaling for good, emphasizing benefits such as increased efficiency, amplified social change, and improved resource attraction.

“Her story and success illuminate the path for female entrepreneurs from all backgrounds and we are looking forward to celebrating that.

“Nyasha had very humble beginnings as a refugee, and it goes to show you that glass ceilings can be smashed.”

Nyash Gwatidzo’s social impact journey began as a Zimbabwean refugee, when she founded a therapy group for sexually abused teenage girls.

In 1992, with £800 redundancy, she established a therapeutic home for children, evolving it into a £150m enterprise, Banya Family Placement agency, by 1994.

In 2003, she set up Vana Trust, dedicated to children’s education in the UK and Zimbabwe. Today, she oversees nine social enterprises, supporting vulnerable children and empowering women entrepreneurs across the UK and Africa.

She the founder of the Impactful Billionaires Club, a community of social entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and thought leaders who are committed to changing lives worldwide.

The Festival of Female Enterprise is a day of networking, and training sessions with professional female industry leaders, including: Fiona Scott from Scott Media; Mary Ryan,UK Director of Innovation; Debbie Gilbert, founder of Best Women Business Awards; and author Denise O’Leary.

Female entrepreneurs can participate in action, debate and upskilling, to overcome the barriers that all too often prevent female-led businesses and professionals from reaching their full potential.
