*UPDATE: This article previously stated that Armed Forces Day is taking place on Sunday in error.

The event is taking place on Saturday, June 24.

READING is set to pay tribute to its military veterans and service personnel for Armed Forces Day.

On Saturday a public event will mark the day with musical performances, entertainment, workshops, and ceremonies in Forbury Gardens.

The annual event begins at 11am, and will feature a tribute to Vera Lynn performed by Diane James, as well as performances by The Slivertones and The Barberettes.

Youngsters will also be able to enjoy face painting and balloon modelling, with Reading-based arts charity Jelly offering workshops throughout the day.

Representatives from military charities and community organisations are holding stalls, as will the Royal British Legion, The Forgotten British Gurkha Veterans Charity, and the Reading Ex-British Gurkha Association, among others.

While there will be a number of stall offering refreshments, attendees are also welcomed to bring a picnic.

Armed Forces Day is an annual event in which members of the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force, are honoured and celebrated, as well as their fellow service personnel and veterans.

Around 150 events will be held in towns, cities, and some military bases across the UK.

Cllr Tony Page, the mayor of Reading, said: “Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for our community to come together to show our appreciation to the men and women who have served our country in the armed forces, and to those who continue to do so.

“This event is always popular and will include everyone from cadets to veterans. Everyone is welcome to join us and show their support.

“You can enjoy all the activities on offer at Forbury gardens and even bring a picnic.”

Reading’s celebrations for Armed Forces Day 2023 will take place in Forbury Gardens from 11am on Saturday, June 24
