READING is set to hold its first-ever Disability Pride event this weekend.
The inaugural event will mark National Disability Pride Month in July and foster unity among the disabled community as well as family, friends, and support organisations.
The national month strives to challenge societal perceptions and preconceptions of people with disabilities, tackle stereotypes, and promote equality and acceptance of disabled people.
Reading will celebrate on Saturday, July 8, with an event on Broad Street, including live vocal performances from Rona Topaz and Miles, a comedy set from Helen Bryant, and a theatrical production from Rank & File.
There will also be stalls offering support and information from relevant organisations such as the Me2Club and Fab4all.
Reading Borough Council leader Cllr Jason Brock said: “Saturday’s celebrations on Broad Street will be the first time Disability Pride has been hosted in our town and it is an ideal opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of disabled people across Reading.
“This event is not just about awareness–it is about pride, empowerment, embracing our diverse abilities, and our unique individuality.
“Disability is not a limitation, but rather an integral part of who we are as individuals and as a community.
“Everyone is invited to join in this celebration of inclusivity, acceptance, and unity.”
The Disability Pride event takes place on Broad Street between 11am-3pm on Saturday, July 8, and is free to attend.
