His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO visited Reading School to commemorate their 900th anniversary.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit marked a significant milestone in the School’s history. Reading School said The Duke’s own longstanding commitment to championing young people resonated deeply with those present, and his participation reminded staff, students, parents and guests that strong community partnerships sit at the heart of all that is good about the School.
During the visit, His Royal Highness observed local primary school children taking part in Reading School’s social impact programme, Future Stories. In these sessions, Reading School students worked alongside primary pupils in activities designed to raise aspirations, build confidence and broaden access to high-quality learning opportunities. The long-running programme helps remove barriers so that children from all backgrounds can benefit from the opportunities provided by a Reading School education.
The Duke also visited creative design and Mandarin lessons, and met with the School’s Ukrainian students, members of the Combined Cadet Force, National Badminton Team winners and the Street Dance Mentoring team.
“We were honoured to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh,” said Dr Chris Evans, Headmaster of Reading School.
“His visit recognises the significance of our 900th anniversary and celebrates the work of our students and staff to support local children through Future Stories. Today’s classroom visits demonstrated the tangible difference that practical mentorship and early aspiration-raising can make to young learners’ confidence and future choices.”
The visit concluded with a Commemoration Service attended by the Reading School community, MP Matt Rodda, the Mayor of Reading, invited guests and local partners.
