ON SATURDAY, September 24, Reading Museum will host a lecture and gallery tour looking in detail at the history and the context of the tapestry.
Reading Museum’s extensive collection includes a near-perfect replica of the Bayeux Tapestry, as well as a number of other artefacts.
A gallery tour will see attendees walk the tapestry and observe the individual “episodes” and comparing them to the history of the Battle of Hastings through written records.
The event will also feature a walking tour around the old grounds of the Abbey, including the old hospitium guest house, the site of the abbey mill, the monk’s quarters, the remaining gate, and the site of Henry I’s tomb.
As well as a tour of the Abbey site, a lecture will be held examining the history of the original tapaestry and the replica at Reading Museum.
It will include the theories surrounding the creators of the work, why it was made and how, the methods of displaying and keeping the work.
The tour will use Reading Museum’s collection of artefacts as references to help contextualise the story of the tapestry and tell the stories of Bishop Odo, King Henry I, and Turold.
The event will give exclusive access to the tapestry gallery, a hands-on session with some of the artefacts, and a walk around the abbey grounds.
The event will be led by Dr. Andy Fear, who will give the lecture on the history of the tapestry.
The first event will take place on Saturday, September 24, and again on Saturday, May 6.Tickets begin from £155, available via www.andantetravels.co.uk
