More than 120 children and adults with learning disabilities gathered together for a sponsored walk in Reading to celebrate Learning Disability Week.
Hosted by Reading Mencap, which supports local people with learning disabilities and their families, participants were encouraged to wear bright, colourful shoes as they walked a mile around Forbury Gardens to raise awareness of learning disability.
Sir John Madejski opened the event as Reading Mencap’s patron and around 50 volunteers from Grant Thornton helped to ensure it ran smoothly.
Walkers included sixth formers from The Avenue and Addington Schools, students from Reading College as well as adults with learning disabilities who use services at Strathy Close and Reading Mencap.
Kate Stonehouse, Reading Mencap’s corporate engagement officer, said it was fantastic to see the event so well supported.
She said: “People with learning disabilities are often marginalized in our society and this walk was about bringing the Reading community together to ensure they were seen, heard and celebrated.
“Completing a mile was a challenge for some walkers but the smiles on everyone’s faces said it all. This was truly a walk to remember.”
