READING FC manager Veljko Paunovic revealed that the club are still working to add players before the close of the January transfer window.

“We have learned lessons in the past about our depth, but couldn’t apply them because of limitations on signing players.

“We’re working to bring someone in. I believe it will be last-minute given our situation.”

The Serbian boss still remains optimistic over the prospect of re-signing forward Andy Carroll after his short-term deal expired earlier this month.

“We follow up on the daily with him.

“We want to be respectful but at the same time let him know we want him back.

“We also understand his position and he needs time before he makes his final decision.

“We remain hopeful and remain interested.”

The Royals have made one addition to their squad already this window after they brought in 19-year-old goalkeeper on loan from Arsenal.

“We lost Rafael (Cabral) unexpectedly, that’s football and that happens and we needed to strengthen that position.

“We have seen him in training doing well and showing his talent and what he can bring to the table.

“We need to see more from him but he is someone who will strengthen the team.

“Everyone here competes for their spot. We want everyone who comes here to have a fair chance to succeed.”

The Royals boss was also questioned about the influence of football agent Kia Joorabchian and his relationship with owner Mr Dai Yongge.

“He (Kia) is friends with the owner and is known as an adviser, not only for our owner, but he has been involved in football for a long time.

“I do have conversations with him.

“He is advising the owners and I think he wants the best for the people he advises and that’s all I can tell you.”

Paunovic also provided injury updates on several players, including Yakou Meite, Ovie Ejaria, Tom McIntyre and Alen Halilovic.

“He (Yakou Meite) is a strong guy, but after a difficult injury you need that reassurance.

“We have to be careful to build his form and game fitness because there are risks.

“He is very eager to return and come back but he will need a couple more games with the under 23’s.

“Tom McIntyre will be involved with under 23 games before he comes back.

“Ovie Ejaria is back in training and getting back in shape.

“He’s a fit guy and didn’t have a major injury before his covid issue. We expect he can be in the squad for Saturday.

“(Alen) Halilovic is recovering and is willing to push. His injury is similar to the one he had before looks less severe. The first time we lost him for two months.”
