Reading FC legend Brian McDermott has started a new role in America.
The former Royals boss, who had two separate spells as manager with the club, has started a new position as Consultant at Major League Soccer club Charlotte FC.
McDermott shared on LinkedIn: “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Consultant at Charlotte FC! A big thank you to Zoran Krneta for the opportunity to join the recruitment team at such a great club.”
McDermott started his coaching career at Slough Town and then moved to Woking before he joined as Reading’s chief scout in 2000 under Alan Pardew’s management team.
He then took over as caretaker manager in 2009 after Brendan Rodgers’ brief stint as manager ended.
After an exceptional caretaker reign, which saw Reading defeat Premier League giants Liverpool in the FA Cup third-round at Anfield, McDermott was appointed as permanent manager in January 2010.
There was a significant upturn in Reading’s form and McDermott guided them all the way to the play-off final, where they were beaten by Swansea City at Wembley.
However, the next season, Reading stormed to the Championship title and won promotion to the Premier League.
McDermott was sacked by Reading in March 2013 after a run of four successive losses.
He spent time as Leeds United manager and then as a scout at Arsenal before he returned to Reading as manager in December 2015.
However, the second spell was much more unsuccessful and lasted just six months.
He returned to scouting at Arsenal in June 2016 and has since worked as director of football at Scottish club Hibernian in May 2023.
