Veljko Paunovic has admitted that he is aiming to add to his squad during the January transfer window.
The Royals will be without first-choice full-backs Baba Rahman and Andy Yiadom who are competing at the African Cup of Nations this month, which prompted the boss to highlight that as a key area to prioritise.
“We are looking at those who are available in the free agents market and also some loan possibilities because we need cover,” said Paunovic.
“We don’t have a natural left-back in the squad with experience without Baba.
“The right-back position is nearly the same, although Felipe (Araruna) is back, but he has been out for over a year with injury.”
Paunovic described his relationship with club owner Mr Dai Yongge as ‘positive’ and described his ambitions going forward.
He continued: “The owner is positive. He is keen to win and wants to look for solutions.
“He’s not the happiest man in the world right now given our situation but he is very optimistic. We get along very good together.
“I feel his support and his energy as a fuel for me and it helps me do what I want to do.
“Next season will be a challenge and even the season after that, we always have to be positive about that and look for opportunities in the market and our academy.
“We’ve proved how much we believe in our academy and the work that is done there.
“We continue working with our approach but there will be difficult decisions to make when the time comes.”
Paunovic also admitted that he is confident that Andy Carroll will extend his contract with the club which is due to expire this month.
“We’ve made our best possible offer and are awaiting a response,” continued Paunovic.”
“We’re in time with our deadline and expecting the best possible outcome.
“He is happy here and we hope we can continue to work together.”
