GURKHAS campaigning for pension equality have been given the backing of Reading East MP Matt Rodda.
He met with Gyanraj Rai and Gurkha campaigners outside Reading station on Tuesday, March 27, ahead of their visit to London.
They were taking part in the final round of bilateral talks between British and Nepalese governments, where the issue of Gurkha pensions was on the agenda.
More than 46,000 Nepalese Gurkha soldiers died in the 200 years fighting as members of the British Army and the Gurkha Equal Rights said veterans still don’t have access to the same rights as British soldiers.
There is a large Nepalese community living in Reading, including many veterans.
Mr Rodda said: “It was a privilege to show my support for local Gurkhas.
“Gurkha soldiers who retired before 1997 receive lower pensions than other British soldiers, I am calling for fair treatment for Gurkha veterans.”
