THE re3 Partnership of Bracknell Forest, Reading, and Wokingham Borough Councils who are working with FCC Environment, was pleased to welcome delegates to the re3 recycling centre in Reading as part of last week’s National Civic Amenity Site (NCAS) / HWRCs Conference, organised by Let’s Recycle.
Held at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, the conference brought together more than 80 delegates from across the UK’s waste and recycling sector to share insights and best practices around the role of Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).
Opening the conference, Cllr Karen Rowland, Chair of the re3 Joint Waste Disposal Board, highlighted the essential role HWRCs play in local communities in helping to keep resources in the loop and in supporting circular economy.
Throughout the day, delegates heard from a wide range of industry experts with presentations focusing on site design as well as textile and electrical waste recycling.
Rory Brien, Head of Municipal Waste at FCC Environment, led an insightful session on the growing use of AI and booking systems, and their role in improving operations at recycling sites.
In addition, re3 presented its own case study, delivered by Monika Bulmer, re3 Marketing and Communications Officer, who shared how re3 has integrated reuse initiatives into day-to-day operations including the latest books and school uniforms reuse schemes.
Speaking after the conference, Cllr Karen Rowland, Chair of the Joint Waste Disposal Board, and Reading Borough Council’s Lead Councillor for Environmental Services and Community Safety; Cllr Helen Purnell, Vice-Chair of the Joint Waste Disposal Board, and Bracknell Forest Council’s Executive Member for the Environment and Community Cohesion, and Cllr Katrin Harding, Wokingham Borough Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Climate Emergency said:
“We were pleased to support this industry event and to offer a tour of the re3 facilities to delegates.
“We’re proud that our residents have access to some of the best performing recycling centres in the country which are achieving a 67% recycling rate and a 90% user satisfaction rate.
“We encourage all residents to make full use of the facilities and take advantage of the recycling and reuse opportunities available which are not only helping to reduce waste and protecting the local environment but also creating meaningful social benefits to our communities.”
Scott Adams, re3 General Manager, FCC Environment added:
“We were delighted to welcome delegates on site, to offer them a first-hand look at how FCC Environment operates high performing and truly resident-focused recycling centres.
“The tour was a great opportunity to demonstrate our commitment, and how close collaboration with the three re3 councils allows us to effectively respond to local needs, and maintain the high standards that matter to residents.
“We’re proud to manage facilities that not only serve their communities well but also stand as strong examples of best practice within the sector.”
