READING held its first-ever Disability Pride event last week, marking National Disability Pride Month in July.
The event on Broad Street included live vocal performances from Rona Topaz and Miles, a comedy set from Helen Bryant, and a theatrical production from Rank & File, among others.
Cllr Jan Gavin of the Access and Disabilities Working Group (ADWG) at Reading Borough Council said: “The idea came from the ADWG, which features people with disabilities and representatives from charities and organisations supporting them.
“We wanted to put something on which celebrated the achievements of the disabled community, which is really vibrant in Reading, and raise awareness about their experiences.”
She explained: “Despite the rain–which nearly called us off– we enjoyed singers and comedians, and performances from a group of Ukrainian school children.
“There was one particular singer who created quite a stir, and he received a huge round of applause, and I think that’s something he’ll remember for a long time.”
She also said: “It’s about having fun and enjoying yourself, but also acknowledging the skills and sheer talent of the disabled community.
“These are often so often not seen, so having the opportunity to showcase that was marvellous.”
She explained that while the ADWG also sponsored the event, Reading Borough Council’s events team were joined by a number of volunteers, including those who work at the council.
“They volunteered their time to make it a real community event.”
Looking to the future, Cllr Gavin said: “We hope that we include everyone and can make everything accessible for the disabled community.
“However we hope this will become part of the annual calendar, though next year’s event will hopefully be more sustainable.
“We’ll be seeking sponsorships which will help us make it a bigger event and even more fun.”
