A LOWER Earley primary school invited friends and family to its 40th anniversary celebrations.

All the pupils of Radstock Primary School performed in a showcase of dance and music from the last four decades.

The performances included a Year 6 line dance to Austin, by Dasha, and a Year 5 dance to Spice Up Your Life.

All 414 pupils took part in the celebration event, which was attended by Earley Town Mayor, Mike Smith.

Headteacher Mrs Lou Slocombe shared facts about the history of the school, which has only had three headteachers in 40 years.

She said: “Radstock Primary School is a great community and Friends of Radstock help us to celebrate that, with their Eid, Divali and Lunar New Year fairs to acknowledge the different cultures we have here in school.”

The school first opened its doors to 87 pupils in September 1983, with headteacher Bob Morgan remaining in post until 2000.

He was followed by Drusilla Derrick until 2016, and then by current headteacher Lou Slocombe in 2017.

Parents watched their children dance and enjoyed tasting cupcakes sold by the school’s PTA, Friends of Radstock.

The group, led by parent Heather Neale, has organised 50 fundraising events in 2023/24, more than in any previous school year.

These have included a parent/teacher pub quiz, Christmas wreath making, neon discos, a Remembrance poppy display made from recycled bottles, new parent coffee mornings, and Father’s Day and Mother’s Day sales.

Friends of Radstock give back to the local community whenever they can. After a King’s Coronation celebration event, leftover boxes of cream teas were donated to nearby care home Austen House.

The committee’s enthusiasm has prompted other parents to initiate their own fundraising activities including a Dads’ sponsored walk up Scafell Pike on June 29, that raised over £500.

To complete their 40th birthday celebrations Radstock Primary School has organised a visit from Happy’s Circus, on Thursday, July 11, after the school’s summer fair.

All are welcome, with tickets available to the public.
