AN ARMISTICE Day ceremony was interrupted earlier today by a lone protester earlier today, Monday, November 11.
During the two-minute silence held at the Forbury War Memorial, a single protester interrupted the silence, holding a sign seemingly concerning the continuing situation in Gaza.
A video online shows a female protester standing near the fence during the ceremony holding a sign which partially read: “Our UK government is aiding and abetting genocide in Gaza.”
She began shouting at those attending after the sign was wrestled out of her hands by a bystander, before walking to the front of the memorial where wreaths had been laid and the silence was being observed.
Some bystanders shed tears as she continued to shout, raising a fist in the air as other onlookers filmed, before leaving the area.
A spokesperson for Reading Borough Council said: “Unfortunately a lone protestor chose to disrupt Reading’s two minute silence which took place at Forbury Gardens to mark Armistice Day today.
“We are saddened that the individual considered this an appropriate time and location to protest.
“We’d like to thank everyone who attended this morning’s service, led by the Mayor of Reading, which is open to all members of the public and is hosted annually by the Council as the mark of respect for the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to defend this country.
“The Council has passed all the information it has to Thames Valley Police who are currently investigating.”
