An open gardens scheme in its second year raised £4,000 for charity and brought together nine gardens to take part.
Whiteknights Open Gardens celebrated its second event this year has been nominated for Community of the Year, sponsored by Hilton Reading.
Whiteknights is an area in Reading around Christchurch Green/University, where for 20 years an annual Whiteknights Studio Trail for local artists has been held annually.
From this came the concept of an open gardens event to raise funds for local charities.
The first year, for Thames Valley Air Ambulance, worked so well the group knew they wanted to hold it again, and this year it became bigger and better, said the scheme’s nominator.
This time it raised £4,000 for the Royal Berks Charity, for research into respiratory medicine at Royal Berkshire Hospital.
“The hard work and commitment each individual gardener had given resulted in a spectacular sunny day for the community to come and view,” said the nominator.
The event attracted 400 to 500 visitors.
“The gardeners gave great knowledge and history on their garden and were a real credit to the Whiteknights community, which included the community garden in The Mount, as well as one garden offering refreshments, and local choir/singers singing during the afternoon.
“I saw the efforts put in from afar and on the day, this to me showed the trueness of community,” they added.
