A theatre run by volunteers, celebrating its 78th anniversary, “continues to make a positive impact on Reading’s cultural programme through its commitment to inclusivity, artistic innovation, and community engagement.”
It’s nominator for the Cultural Contribution award said; “One of the theatre’s notable achievements this year was its inclusive production of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood. “Featuring a diverse cast, including individuals with learning disabilities and members of all ages, this production exemplified the theatre’s commitment to keeping theatre accessible to all, not just as audience members but as creators.”
The Progress Youth Theatre provides invaluable opportunities for young people to develop their talents in acting, directing, and stagecraft, they said.
The programme “fosters creativity, confidence, and teamwork, nurturing the next generation of theatre enthusiasts and professionals. By engaging youth in the creative process, Progress Theatre ensures that culture remains vibrant and dynamic in Reading.
“As a welcoming social hub, Progress Theatre offers a space where people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy and participate in the arts,” they added.
The theatre’s annual WriteFest showcases new short plays by emerging playwrights, highlighting its dedication to fostering new talent.
Events like the open-air performances at Reading Abbey Ruins create unique cultural experiences that are accessible to the entire community, said the nominator.
“Progress Theatre’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, artistic innovation, and community involvement has made a significant positive change to the cultural programme in Reading.
“It truly embodies the spirit of the Pride of Reading Awards, celebrating resilience, creativity, and community spirit,” they added.
