Cultural Contribution, Or Williams, sponsor M&G Real Estate
An artist has been running a drop-in art project using embroidery which has had “a profound effect” on refugees and asylum seekers taking part.
Or Williams has been nominated for the Pride of Reading Cultural Contribution award for her work on the art project called The Power of Embroidery. She has run the project, working with Berkshire’s Refugee Support Group, at RISC since September last year.
Her nominator said: “While slow to start, the project eventually took off and now has 15 to 20 people attending on a weekly basis with 13 different languages being spoken around the table.
“The project has become so popular that Or added an extra day per week based at The Atrium at Greyfriars Church to enable greater participation,” they said.
Attendees feedback is that the scheme has had “a profound impact on their lives. In some instances it seemed to give people a reason to get up in the morning.
“Or encouraged people to use the universal language of art to bridge the gap between different cultures and languages,” said the nominator.
The Cultural Contribution award is sponsored by M&G Real Estate.
