A ‘fantastic role model” has become a guiding light in the deaf sailing community empowering deaf people in all walks of life.
Joanna Gardiner has been involved in sailing for 45 years, inheriting the passion from her father who was also deaf, said her nominator for the Community Champion award.
She is presently involved in Deaf Sailing UK as trustee, and Total Communication (Berkshire) Deaf Sailing and Watersport Group, creating content in British sign language (BSL), networking and organising events for the Deaf community.
She has also developed her own sailing skills and is becoming an assistant instructor.
“She wants to show other Deaf people that they can do it too,” said her nominator.
Joanna first established a deaf sailing Club in 1978 and has used her skills and experience since.
She has created the only deaf-focused programme of activities in the UK, at the Andrew Simpson Centre in Reading, which has included a Royal Yachting Association Level 1-3 training sailing programme.
Joanna has recently been appointed youth development manager for Deaf Sailing UK and is leading the youth scouting and recruitment in preparation for the Deaf Sailing World Championship 2024.
Her nominator said: “She’s a fantastic role model, being deaf herself. She regularly visits schools, encouraging young people to try sailing for personal development and wellbeing.
“Joanna empowers deaf people in all walks of life, children, vulnerable people and older people, getting them involved in sailing and water sports, providing new experiences and creating opportunities for the deaf community.”
“She truly deserves to be recognised,” said her nominator.
The award is sponsored by Reading Football Club.
