WINNER: Refugee support group Sponsored by Deloitte
This group has helped refugees to rebuild their lives for more than 30 years.
They were praised by their nominator for ‘their vision of an inclusive society where refugees and people seeking asylum are treated with humanity, dignity and respect.’
Nick Harborne, CEO of Refugee Support Group, and Ellie, fundraising manager, were both truly humbled to have won the award.
“It’s recognition that Reading is a place of welcome for refugees and asylum seekers.
“There have been many staff members and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to look after their fellow human beings.”
Ellie added: “ We’ve seen during the riots an outpouring of support, even from random strangers who have emailed or sent us donations because they were absolutely appalled by what was happening and wanted to show their support to us which was heartwarming.
Nick stated that they wanted to share the award with fellow nominee Tomson Chauke.
Tomson was helped by the group as a refugee many years ago and has since shown tireless support for RSG and the Reading community.
Nick continued: “Tomson gives back so much more for us. What we do is try to support people and tell good news stories. He’s an example of what everyone can do.
“I’m grateful that we’re alongside people that care and can help each other.”
