ASCOT United were crowned 2022/23 FA Vase champions at Wembley Stadium after defeating Newport Pagnell Town 1-0.

After a cagey 80 minutes, substitute Kai Walters helped Ascot get their noses in front, heading home from a well-delivered cross from the right. The goal proved enough to secure a historic title for the Yellas.

Rhys Forster 7: A couple of nervy moments at the start, but was largely assured in goal. Impressed with his positive distribution.

George Lock 8: Established an effective partnership with McCormack down Ascot’s right and looked to get forward with regularity.

Harry Tucker 8: Not afraid to step up and initiate attacks. Put his foot in when required and was probably the pick of the defenders.

Alfie Grant 7: Was left in two minds whether to get tight or drop off when trying to contain Mo Ahmed early on, but grew into the game and could have even got on the scoresheet.

Daniel Bailey 7: Dependable as ever. The skipper had his hands full trying to handle Newport’s attacking threat, but did reasonably well on the afternoon.

Rob Gerrard N/A: Brought the ball forward well and delivered some dangerous balls into the box in the early stages. Took a nasty knock to the head and was forced off in the first half.

Jordan Ajanlekoko 7: Struck the woodwork with a towering header in the opening minutes. Worked his socks off in the middle of the park.

Jay Welch 8: Showcased his passing range from midfield and also came close to breaking the deadlock with a strike from 25 yards out.

Harry Grant 7: Acted as a useful link between midfield and attack, trying to find space in between the lines.

Sean McCormack 9: Adventurous down Ascot’s right and put plenty of quality deliveries into the box, including the assist for the winner.

Brendan Mattew 7: Cut a frustrated figure at times but did his best to hold the ball up and never gave up the ghost, making useful runs to stretch Newport’s back line.

Kai Walters 8: The matchwinner. Replaced Gerrard and worked tirelessly. Grabbed the decider, stealing in at the near post to glance in a McCormack cross.

Marcus Mealing 8: Changed the game. Forced Conway into a smart save with his first involvement before powering a thunderous header against the crossbar.

Chris Ellis: N/A
